Reading and Phonics

Reading

Pupils at Seabrook Church of England Primary School have the opportunity to develop their reading skills in many different ways across the curriculum. We recognise that children have different interests and abilities and for this reason we use a range of reading schemes including:
  • Bug Club
  • Oxford Reading Tree
  • Rigby
  • Floppy Phonics
  • Heinemann
All books are banded and children are benchmarked – this focuses on decoding and comprehension. This is a valuable process which enables staff to ensure that pupils are provided with appropriate challenge and support.   It is important that you read regularly with your child  

Phonics

Phonics is an important skill which taught from the time children start school.  It enables them to decode when reading and develop their spelling skills. At St Seabrook Church of England Primary School we use a scheme called LETTERS AND SOUNDS. At the end of Year 1 all pupils are screened using the DfE Phonics Screening materials. Any pupils who do not meet the required threshold will receive additional support and will be re-screened at the end of Year 2.    

Handwriting

As a school we encourage each child to develop a fluent and cursive handwriting script. Our Handwriting Policy provides some useful tips on how to help your child with their handwriting and it also includes sample sheets of the letter forms and joins which we teach at school.    

Learning Styles

All children are individuals and as such present us with a wide range of learning styles, some learn well by listening, some by seeing things, and others need to physically do things to consolidate their learning. In our teaching we stimulate as many senses as possible to ensure all children progress in their learning.

Success

We think it is vital for all children to experience success in their learning, so we ensure they know exactly what we want them to learn and what a successful attempt will look like. Setting appropriate objectives and expectations helps children to achieve.

Independance

We provide a stimulating environment in which children can access the materials and information they need in their work, increasing their independence as learners. The result is that we have successful, confident learners.

Guided Reading

All children participate in a small guided reading group led by their teacher or teaching assistant, at least once every week. Guided reading helps children to recognise and use the necessary strategies to become confident independent readers, and allows teachers to assess their progress.

Handwriting

Children at Seabrook are taught cursive letter formation from the foundation stage. This helps them to develop a ‘joined up’ handwriting style by the end of KS1.

Religious Education

Religious Education is taught throughout the school using the Kent Scheme of Work. Swordfish Class visited Canterbury Cathedral last year to enjoy the many activities of Cathedral Day.

Equality and Diversity

We believe that it is essential for children to develop an understanding of a variety of cultures. We aim to help children grow into adults who respect and care for all people.

Modern Foreign Languages

All children in the school are taught French. The school was awarded the Silver Kent Accreditation for our Modern Foreign Language teaching in April 2011.

ICT

As the school does not currently have the space for a computer suite, we have instead over 30 laptops that all the children can use in class for various aspects of the curriculum.
